Which line first?

When you're leaving a berth it pays to think about which line you're going to throw first. In most vessels it's preferable to go astern (in reverse) when you are alongside a wharf. This vessel was a 50 passenger water taxi with two Yamaha outboards which is highly maneuverable. I let the stern line go first so it would swing out while the bow remained close to the wharf. In most conditions this will happen naturally if you untie the vessel in that order. However if there was a strong wind or current keeping my stern alongside I would have simply put my starboard (outside) motor into idle reverse (when you hear the click it's in idle), and turned the wheel over to starboard. This would pull the stern of the vessel out before I straightened her up and went astern. It's nice to practice in calm condition so that when it is windy you have the procedure down

pat.
