Make Hay While the Sun Shines

William spent three days last week (in the gorgeous weather!) helping one of our clients complete his logbook so he could get his boat licence. The client had just purchased a 2021 Merry Fisher 1095 which is a fantastic boat, the pinnacle of outboard powered boats. We spent two hours each day practicing berthing the vessel then headed out to explore the harbour. After some cruising to get a feel for the vessel we took the boat to some calm and not so calm anchorages and went through how to position the vessel, how much chain to lay out and how to set the anchor. We then practiced approaching a mooring in a strong breeze and singlehandedly grabbing it. After the client was feeling confident we headed out to sea to talk through some seakeeping basics and how to operate the vessel safely outside of the confines of Sydney Harbour. We discussed passage planning, how to use safety equipment, performed a man overboard drill and how to make a distress call on the radio. We even managed to spot a whale and headed down to Bondi to have a look at Australia's most famous beach from a different perspective.

After three days of four hour lessons the difference between how the client handled the boat was night and day. He was parking the boat like a pro and his confidence levels had soared, happily chatting while maneuvering the boat around the marina. It's a joy to see someone come to grips with such a beautiful boat. By Friday afternoon we were both happy with ourselves for all we had achieved and we discussed the freedom that having a boat and knowing how to use it provides. The possibilities are endless: from relaxing in the peace and quiet, to heading to Athol Bay and watching the sun set over the bridge to dropping anchor next to the Opera House and having a one of a kind family dinner.
